Irene Skylakaki is a Greek singer-songwriter.
She was born in Athens, Greece on August 5, 1990. At the age of thirteen, Irene was given her first guitar and began writing and composing her own music. While her passion for music continued throughout her studies, it was only after completing both an undergraduate (2008-11) and graduate (2012-13) law degree at SOAS University that she decided to dedicate herself fully to her music career.
In the summer of 2012 Irene began working on her debut album, Wrong Direction. The album was produced and arranged by Evripidis Zemenidis, and includes musical collaborations with many veteran musicians of the Greek stage.
Today her band consists of Thanos Michailidis (drums), Evripidis Zemenidis (guitars-arrangement), Christos Petevis (violin), Giorgos Theodoropoulos (piano), Nikos Pasalidis (guitars) and Paraskevas Kitsos (bass & double bass), all prominent Greek musicians.
The video clip for the album’s debut single In the Light was directed by Periklis Mathiellis.
Wrong Direction was presented on September 22, 2012 at Stavros tou Notou Plus and In the Light was the official selection of Cosmote’s Jumping Fish for autumn 2012.
It was also included in the soundtrack of An, a film by Christoforos Papakaliatis.
In the months following the release of Wrong Direction Irene has had several live performances in Athens – including opening for Macy Gray in November 2012 and performing at TEDx Athens and as a guest of Radio Pepper’s Nouvelle Vague Days in December 2012. During the summer Irene performed at the En Lefko Festival, Rockwave and the Megaro Mousikis Garden.
She lists Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and Johnny Flynn as her main musical influences.
